Hoon and Hewitt's Challenge

Gordon Brown's leadership has been challenged by Patricia Hewitt and Geoff Hoon on this snowy afternoon. Will they succeed or are they being "self-indulgent"? More on the story here and here. The BBC thought the story was significant enough to disrupt their wall-to-wall snow coverage, and gave plenty of time for interviews with Hoon and Hewitt on the lunchtime news. Were they right to do so?

  1. As hopeful Claire and I are that David Milibnad will one day be leader of the Labour Party (and Prime Minister), Labour's best hope is to keep Brown until the election, so after their defeat (if that is indeed what happens) they can regroup, change their leader and prepare to take on Cameron in 5 years time. If he is voted out now then we'll just have another Prime Minister with questionable legitimacy and quite possibly the shorted premiership in British political history.

I doubt many of those tipped for the leadership one day would stand against Brown, it would be too damaging for the party. Although saying that, this could be another Thatcher/Heseltine moment when the loss of confidence in Tatcher was enough to oust her, even though she won the leadership challenge!
