The History of Snow
Here is a fascinating and thought-provoking article on the history of people's reactions to snow. If you think things were bad this week, have a look at what happened to New York in the winter of 1888 when hundreds of people were killed, often having been stuck on trains and then freezing to death. People's belief that they have the technology and the infrastructure to carry on with their daily lives, whatever the weather, doesn't seem to have changed much since then. If you like this sort of thing, the USA's "National Snow and Ice Center" also has a history of snow clearing. The picture above was taken during the "Great Blizzard" of 1947 and there are lots more photos like this here.
