Cockerell on TV election debates

A great HP programme from Michael Cockerell here on BBC iplayer. He looks at the TV election debates in the USA and compares them to the debate on having an election debate in the UK. Some fascinating behind the scenes footage from the American presidential campaigns, including the most recent between Obama and McCain, and insight into why up till now there have not been any election debates between the leaders in the UK. Original footage and analysis of the 1960 election debate and a particularly candid interview with George Bush Sr are highlights!

  2. I think Clegg came off best in the debate... Cameron didn't really do as well as expected and Gordon Brown really isn't very charismatic on TV and he came across - as usual - the worst out of the three.

  3. I really think the Lib Dems could do well out of these debates - Nick Clegg did an amazing job!

    Well Done Nick!!!

  5. I can understand why Nick Clegg won according to the polls, but based on his performance alone, I would not vote Liberal Democrat. If I'm honest, I've been a bit disappointed with him of late.

  6. I'm really surprised by the polls, Gordon was good, a little aggressive with good things to say. I was surprised by Cameron who seemed to take a bit of a back seat (apart from when he was attacking Nick)

did anyone see that awkward end with Nick and David when they shook hands and both moved in to pat the others back at the same time

also GB was awesome today in Milton Keynes

  7. People only suddenly love Nick Clegg because they didn't know who he was before and so his ideas that they've now seen in more detail than ever before suddenly seem attractive.

I wasn't that impressed with him, nor David Cameron at all. I liked Gordon Brown's seemingly at ease approach, he was smiling and laughing and cracking some jokes that weren't obviously rehearsed, unlike Cameron's.

Overall, I think that what Gordon said was most substantial but Nick did the best.

  8. I think definitely David Cameron came off the worst... I found Gordon Brown lacking charisma and frankly he didn't come across well, although yes he did have a few good points, he also at points was frankly to offensive and almost bullying... and frankly agreed with Nick Clegg too much. Nick Clegg definitely came off best!!
