Is this the Liberal Democrats big chance?

The Liberal Democrats meet in Bournemouth this week, their last conference before the General election. Could this be the election where they make the breakthrough and break the existing two party dominance in UK politics? Philip Stephens argues in the FT that the next election may represent a great opportunity for the Lib Dems to become a significant third force in politics.

  1. In today's Mirror (it was on the train, I didn't buy it) Nick Clegg was referred to as the Kingmaker of the next election.
I thought it was hilarious, but if there really will be a hung parliament in the next election, I suppose it could be true.

  2. While many may think the Conservatives have it in the bag, anything could happen between now and June, so there's everything to play for. Kudos to them for trying, although anything's better than labour really..

  3. We tend to mock the Lib Dems when they make claims such as 'I want to be Prime Minister', 'Prepare for government' and 'We're ready for power', and write them off as somewhat dillusional because we're so used to Labour and Conservatives completely dominating parliament and enjoying comfortable enough majorities.

But the trouble is, the Lib Dems seem to make exactly the same claim every conference, that THIS is the year where they will become dominant.
