Black History Month - Lennox Lewis

Black History Month: 10 October 2020

Lennox Lewis is a retired professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 2003. He was born on 2 September 1965 in West Ham, London, to Jamaican parents and lived in Canada from the age of 12. He is a three-time world heavyweight champion, a two-time lineal champion, and remains the last heavyweight to hold the undisputed title. He became a dominant amateur boxer and won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in 1983, and ranked as 6th in the world by AIBA in 1984, aged just 18.

Lewis represented Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal, after he has defeated Riddick Bowe in the super-heavy weight division final. He is regarded by many as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, and one of the greatest British fighters of all time. In 1999, he was named Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and was BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Lewis is currently ranked by BoxRec as the sixth best heavyweight boxer of all time.
