Historical Ignorance
Here is yet another article moaning about how ignorant Britain's children are about history. "Adolf Hitler was Germany's football team manager, according to youngsters aged nine to 15," it says, and apparently 12% of the children surveyed thought Remembrance Sunday was represented by the McDonalds logo. Pardon? How was this survey conducted exactly?
Is this the true state of the nation's historical ignorance, or have Britain's youth been poorly represented here? Let us know, or perhaps click on the link and let the Daily Mail know what you think...

What a complete waste of an article. Its a typical Mail editorial, sensationalist headline, subtle anti-government undertones so that the hoard of commenters can take pleasure in blaming the Labour government for the results of their misleading survey, which was twisted and spun to fit the Mail's political outlook.
ReplyDeleteAs some one the commenters have thankfully pointed out, this was most likely a multiple choice test, taken with a joking attitude by 9 year olds. I doubt there is more than a handful of children in Britain who truly think that Hitler was a football coach, certainly not the 5% as the Mail would have us believe.
Interestingly, I cannot find anything else about this survey on Google...
Apologies, I meant horde as in group of people, not hoard as in treasure :)
ReplyDeleteThe article itself is ridiculous - just another excuse for the Daily Mail to insult the Labour government - but it was the comments which really bothered me. So many people called children/teens ignorant and uneducated that I lost count, and the insults being thrown at teachers were equally disturbing.
ReplyDeleteI found it particularly ironic that many of the people insulting the level of education in Britain managed to make so many mistakes in their comments. Personal favourites: 'THIS COUNTRY HAS NO FUTURE....IT IS DIEING' and 'I can't beleive it, according to labour our childred are the so intelligent that nearly all get an A in GCSE's'.
The Daily Mail... hmm, that just about sums the articl up really. How representative was the survey anyway...?
ReplyDeleteThe comments are far worse; the "best rated comments" are the ones which insult the youths of today...
Really, i think its quite shameful that people believe that ALL young people are ignorant, because that clearly isn't the case, and some of those people need politics lessons... really i'm not quite sure the EU is the "fourth reich..."
Grrrr at the Daily Mail!!!
