What are you reading?

The summer holidays are fast approaching, which give a chance for everyone (including Nonsuch HP) to catch up on their reading. Many will also be considering what to put on their UCAS Personal Statements so we would like to ask 2 questions:
What are people reading at the moment?
What history or politics books could they recommend?

  1. I think Middlemarch by George Eliot is a must-read!

  2. I'm going to read "Manhunt" by James L Swanson, which is about the search for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated Abraham Lincoln in 1865. It was given to me by father after he visited Ford's Theatre! More info at http://www.jameslswanson.com/index.html

  3. I will be reading 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini.

For all you Mary Tudor 'fans' I would recommend 'Mary Tudor: England's First Queen,' by Anna Whitelock. She highlights that in fact Mary had considerable successes as Queen and certainly provided a good foundation for Elizabeth.

  6. Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

That book really highlights the situation in Russia in the 1870's. But that guy is so DEPRESSING!

  7. I am reading Justin Webb's Have a Nice Day:A Journey through Obama's America which is easy to read and an interesting defence of the USA. I am also reading A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali which is good drama but harrowing stuff when you realise it is a true story set in Rwanda in 1994...

  8. Wild Swans is an excellent book!- Good recommendation badonkadonk. On the Rwanda theme I would recommend Paul Rusesabagina's autobiography (the film Hotel Rwanda was based on this). It highlights the power of one individual, good triumphing against evil- though harmony unfortunately has not been restored in the country.
