Why Miliband had to go.
There is some good analysis here of why David Milliband decided he should leave frontbench politics - mainly because he felt he would be put under unbearable scrutiny from the media about any perceived differences between him and his brother. You can see his interview with Nick Robinson on the day of his departure in the video above. Although I think that it is a shame David did not win, we should really be concentrating on celebrating Ed's victory rather than trying to guess what David is going to do next. Although David has retired from the forefront of politics, this will not be the end of him; he is a great polician and his absence will be noticed. However, Ed managed to win the contest and is now in charge. The media should really be concentrating on his plans for the shadow cabinet and his plans for the Labour party as a whole, rather than thinking up various plans for David's future. The shadow cabinet is required to be an effective check on the Government and it needs appear strong so it can be taken seriously. The media need to move on from this and start to concentrate on Ed's plan for Labour's glorious comeback! (and yes that will happen)
